Slapton Sands, Devon
Slapton Sands is a beach on the Devon coast between
Kingsbridge and
Dartmouth . It lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB) and despite the name is actually a shingle beach covered with smooth pebbles, some of them quite large. It was the site of the ill fated Exercise Tiger in 1944, a full scale rehearsal for
D-Day which came under attack from German E-Boats resulting in the loss of 638 servicemen. A Sherman tank sunk in the action now stands nearby in Torcross. Behind the beach is
Slapton Ley , a nature reserve.
