Set in the South-West of Scotland, Lanarkshire is a highly populated area,
with almost one quarter of the country’s population living within the
County. Lanarkshire includes the towns of Hamilton , East Kilbride , Bothwell
and Lanark in South Lanarkshire, with Airdrie , Wishaw, Cumbernauld and
Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire. It also boasts the Clyde Valley,
affectionately known as the “Garden of Scotland”, Owing to its areas of
remarkable beauty.
Giving the county its name, Lanark is a market town situated in South
Lanarkshire. The historic Burg of Lanark was the site of the first meeting
of the Scots Parliament in 978. One of the most important towns in the Clyde
Valley, Lanark Market is one of the biggest and busiest Farmer’s Markets
in Scotland. Throughout the town, there are many monuments to one of
Lanark’s most famous past residents, William ‘ Braveheart ’ Wallace. The
Laminers is a week long festival held annually in the Lanark area, climaxing
with the crowning of the Laminer Queen.
Near Lanark is the 200 year old conservation World Heritage village of New
Lanark, restored as a lasting monument to Robert Owen, mill owner and social
reformer. Surrounded by woodlands, the riverside village is now a living
community. The New Lanark Conservation Trust manages a variety of local
visitor attractions, including The Falls of Clyde . The Falls of Clyde Nature
Reserve is a 100 acre area of outstanding natural beauty, And The Falls of
Clyde Centre Provides fascinating information about the surrounding
woodlands and wildlife.
Near the town of Bothwell and overlooking the river Clyde, is the medieval
Bothwell Castle. Building began in the late 1200’s, but due to invasions
and sieges, the original plans were never completed and what stands today is
mainly the legacy of the Earls of Douglas from around 1400.
Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, resembling a vast pepper pot and seen for miles
in every direction, sits the Hamilton Mausoleum, constructed as a chapel and
tomb for the 10th Duke of Hamilton in the 1850’s.
For the adventurers, Shuttle Row, Blantyre, a museum and visitor centre
built on the birth place of David Livingstone . Set in 20 acres of gardens
and parkland, the museum is complimented by a shop, restaurant and
educational area.
And for the more sedate traveller, just wander around and lose yourself in
the scenic beauty of the Clyde Valley, only then will you appreciate why it
is called the “Garden of Scotland”.
