County Tyrone - 13 places to stay

County Tyrone is the largest of the six counties of Northern Ireland. Apart from its main town of Omagh and the other main towns of Cookstown, Dungannon and Strabane, the area is fairly sparse in terms of population, but full to the brim of fascinating prehistoric sites, Celtic remains, beautiful forest parks, and is home to the stunning Sperrin Mountains which stretch for just short of 65 km. Like its neighbouring counties of Armagh and Fermanagh, there’s a wealth of activities to suit outdoor types, particularly with the mountains on the doorstep which offer some great camping facilities, and trails for hill walkers and cyclists, but there are also lots of other activities to keep the whole family happy.
The main town in County Tyrone is Omagh, which serves as an excellent base to plan your stay and explore the best parts of this county. Attractions nearby the town include the picturesque Gortin Glen Forest Park, which you can either navigate on foot, or take a leisurely drive through – either way there are some fantastic views to appreciate along the way. Near the park is The Ulster History Park. Set in 35 acres in the foothills the park contains reconstructions of some of the monuments of the past, from the flimsy huts of the earliest hunter-gatherers to the fortified manor house of later years. In addition to that the Ulster-American Folk Park, one of the country's best museums, is also a top stop for those interested in a potted history of the area.
Tyrone is literally wall to wall with standing stones, burial cairns and crosses. Near the town of Cookstown (which is famous for its sausages by the way), you'll find a number of key Neolithic sites such as the 10th Century Ardboe Cross, the Iron Age fort at Tullyhogue, the Beaghmore Stone Circles, which were only uncovered 40 years ago, and the chambered cairn of Knockmany at the top of a steep wooded hill north of Clogher.
If you are in Dungannon, make sure you take a trip to the Tyrone Crystal factory where you can see molten glass being hand-blown, and if Strabane is included in your itinerary you’ll not be disappointed as it offers great facilities for tourists and is great for exploring some of the most beautiful gentle countryside that the country has to offer. You might want to swing by Woodrow Wilson’s (28th president of the US) ancestral pad just to be nosey.
