At 20 miles across, Rutland may be England’s smallest county, but when it comes to entertaining visitors, this rural English county which fairly recently divorced itself from Leicestershire , packs a mighty punch. Not only do its two principal market towns, Oakham and Uppingham provide a wealth of interesting attractions and activities, but the two towns are surrounded by over forty unique and picturesque ‘chocolate box’ villages which each have their own appeal for visitors, as well a dazzling choice of quaint country pubs and hotels all offering a warm welcome.
The town of Oakham, which received a mention in the Domesday Book of 1086, has its very own Castle, built in around 1180 – its Great Hall being one of the finest examples of late 12th century domestic architecture in England. The Castle also houses an unusual collection of horseshoes donated by all its visitors throughout the ages, including royalty. Situated around the Castle, there are other historical points of interest including the Market Place, Butter Cross and Stocks as well as a fantastic selection of ‘one of a kind’ shops, fine art galleries and antique & curio dens. The same can be said for Uppingham which also delivers when it comes to antique shops and particularly antiquarian bookshops. If your inclination is more towards hand-made jewellery and gifts, then you’ll not be disappointed either. Oakham also is home to the Falconry & Owl centre which should be stop on the map for all bird-lovers.
As well as Oakham Castle there are a number of other historic attractions in and around Rutland. Burghley House is one of the largest and grandest houses of the first Elizabethan Age – a walk round its historic parkland designed by Capability Brown is highly recommended – and Belvoir Castle and Rockingham Castle are also open to visitors, as is the 400 year old Uppingham School . Bishops Palace at Lyddington is also worth a visit.
If that wasn’t enough, Rutland also harbours another well kept secret – Rutland Water . Built in the 1970s to supply water to the East Midlands this attractive 3,100 acre reservoir is now Rutland's most popular tourist attraction, offering a huge variety of activities for all ages, whether you are into sports or wildlife. You can try watersports such as sailing, windsurfing, canoeing or fishing (Rutland Water is stocked with 130,000 trout!) If you prefer to be on dry land you can have a go at rock-climbing, cycling or hiking as well as more leisurely pursuits such as bird-watching for osprey or visiting the Butterfly Farm.
Don’t underestimate Rutland – this county is certainly testament to the fact that size isn’t always everything!
