Set in the heart of the English countryside, well placed for access to and from all parts of England and Wales, is the beautiful and historic county of Oxfordshire. The M40 motorway runs through Oxfordshire from north to south, providing the main link with the rest of Central England of the country. The population of Oxfordshire centres mainly in the historic University City of Oxford . There are other significant population centres at Banbury , Bicester , Chipping Norton and Kidlington, all to the north of Oxford. West of Oxford there is Witney , whilst Chinnor and Thame can be found to the east. The main population centres to the south of Oxford are Abingdon , Didcot , Henley-on-Thames , Wallingford and Wantage . There are so many places worth visiting in Oxfordshire that it is sure to need more than one visit. One of the most famous tourist attractions in Oxfordshire is the magnificent Blenheim Palace . This beautiful English baroque house is situated at Woodstock in Oxfordshire. It was built as a gift to the 1st Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill , to commemorate his victory over the French. Unfortunately, the political climate changed and this was no longer considered something to be proud of. Churchill fell from grace and was eventually exiled. The palace is also notable as being the birthplace and ancestral home to Sir Winston Churchill , one of the best-known Prime Ministers in British History. Today the palace and its gardens are popular with tourists, but also with film directors. Many films have used the palace; including Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. If you prefer to get away to the calm of the English countryside, then Oxfordshire offers you a choice of two designated Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Chilterns are a range of hills that stretch 75 miles in a diagonal line from southwest to northeast, starting in Oxfordshire at Goring-on-Thames and finishing up in Bedfordshire . The hills offer many breathtaking views and opportunities for walking, horse riding and cycling holidays. Oxfordshire is also the setting for a large part of the Cotswolds , another Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Quaint villages built of the local Cotswold Stone typify the Cotswolds, for many it is the essence of rural England. For the serious hiker, the Cotswolds offer The Cotswold Way, a long distance footpath running over the Cotswold Edge escarpment. Make sure you have some comfortable walking boots if you want to follow the complete route though; it is over one hundred miles long! If exotic animals are for you, then you should visit the Cotswold Wildlife Park. Here you can see many different animals and birds, including over 40 that are part of either an ESB (European Studbook) or EEP (European Endangered Species Programme). For something different, and particularly if you are a fan of railway history, you could visit the Didcot Railway Centre . The centre is the museum of the Great Western Railway and contains many fine exhibits including the replica steam engine the 'Firefly'. The Firefly engines were used in the mid-19th century by the GWR. The River Thames flows through much of Oxfordshire and has always been a big feature of life at Henley-on-Thames, famous for the annual Henley Royal Regatta . The Regatta has had Royal status since Prince Albert became patron in 1851. Henley-on-Thames houses the River and Rowing Museum, which is split into three main themes, The River, The Sport of Rowing and the town of Henley-on-Thames. The City of Oxford itself hosts one of the most famous Universities in the world and is the oldest in the English-speaking world, dating back to at least the end of the 11th century. Its long-standing rival the University of Cambridge was formed by academics from Oxford who fled the town in 1209 following a dispute between students and the local townsfolk.
