Situated on the banks of a deep valley, submerged at the end of the last Ice Age, Plymouth has long owed its existence to its natural harbour. For centuries the deep waters at the mouth of the Tamar ensured both political and the economic success for the area. Although the decline of the port saw Plymouth's fortunes drop in the past, it is once again a thriving and vibrant city. The city feeds upon its rich maritime past with world famous heritage sites like Plymouth Hoe, the Mayflower steps the Barbican where you can enjoy centuries of maritime tradition. Plymouth is served by excellent rail and road links. The A38 passes across the northern edge of the City and gives access from both the west (Cornwall) the east where it links to the M5 at Exeter. The train from Paddington Station in London takes around 3-4 hours and gives spectacular views on the run from Exeter. Ferry routes take you to France (Roscoff) and Spain (Santander). The city's naval past is important and forms an important part of the tourist attractions in the area but it certainly isn't all there is to do or see there. For those that don't posess the sea legs for a boat trip, scuba diving, wind-surfing or water skiing there's the Plymouth City Centre Shopping Boulevards. Or perhaps you prefer just to relax on the waterfront and enjoy the stunning views across the historical harbour. Situated in one of Britain's most beautiful areas, the visitor can also enjoy walks, drives and even cycle tours of the local flora and fauna. Take a trip along the Plym Valley cycleway and you may be treated to the sight of peregrine falcons as they wheel in the sky in their hunt for prey above their breeding sites on the cliffs at Cann Quarry.
