Samuel Prout
Born in Plymouth, DevonBorn on 17th of September 1783
Died on 10th of February 1852
Prout showed artistic talent in his schooldays, working in the watercolour medium that was always to be his field. Though his instructional drawing books were influential, he enjoyed limited artistic success until 1818 when a trip to Rouen opened his eyes to the potential of street scenes and architectural painting. He thereafter travelled widely to find his subjects. For both George IV and Victoria he served as Painter in Water-colours in Ordinary; Ruskin, who had been a pupil of Prout’s, expressed a preference for his erstwhile master over Turner, praise indeed.
