Devon Reports

County Review by alan thomas on December 30th, 2013
Devon is absolutely brilliant. Two great cities and places like Tiverton, Torquay , Tavistock & Paignton not to mention Bideford and Barnstaple

County Review by nick on January 29th, 2006
I have been on holiday in devon on quite a few occasions and, whilst very busy in the summer, I can happily report that all that they say in the brochures is true. Its a super county with great beaches, lush farmland and rugged moor. The county is actually surprisingly big and varied with loads to do. Go to the north bit, its mostly unspoilt and very rural although the beaches are better in the south. Definitely worth a visit

Ashprington, Devon

Review of Ashprington by denmead on October 2nd, 2006
Have stayed several times at the Watermans Arms, which is set in a beautiful spot at Bow Bridge. This is a fine pub but the accomodation requires updating.Breakfast is superb but the evening meals have gone a little to upmarket. The food is well presented, but very little in the way of traditional pub food is available.A little tweaking with the menu and updating rooms would put this pub a special place to visit.

Bere Ferrers, Devon

Review of Bere Ferrers by Jim on April 30th, 2006
Bere Ferrers is a small village on the bank of the river tamar. It has stunning views all year round though in the winter it does feel sureal and strange. The Pub "Ye Old Plough Inn" Has freindly Owners, does good food and also you can some of devons finest Ale There. Mmm...Beer. Anyway if you have the time one day while visiting plymouth Its well worth a look at. Handy also because there is a train servce That Runs Trough The Tamar Valley From Plymouth and the veiws are perfect. Not much for Teens there unless they are interested in Bike Riding, Camping general outside fun. But why take my word for it come down and have a look for your self.

Bickleigh, Devon

Review of Bickleigh by Simone Stanbrook-Byrne on February 16th, 2009
Yearlstone Vineyard, Bickleigh is a must for wine-lovers and those just wishing to soak up the ambience of this glorious part of Devon. Tour the vineyard with its wonderful views, taste the fab wine, eat the exquisite food in the terrace cafe, help pick the grapes. Yearlstone is somewhere one really shouldn't miss.

Review of Bickleigh by roger white on February 5th, 2009
Why have you excluded the one good thing in Bickleigh - the famous Yearlstone Vineyard...as featured regularly on BBC tv - most recently with Oz Clarke? 4 hectares of vines, a wonderful cafe, regional winemaking centre - just read one of the top wine books on English wines!

Bideford, Devon

Review of Bideford by Simon Hughes on May 1st, 2007
Lovely surroundings but never again! We recently attended our friends wedding at Yeoldon House Hotel. The day was perfect, the Hotel was ideal, the food was excellent, the setting was amazing. But i'm afraid this was marred by the unprofessional, frosty,"headmistress" type attitude conducted by the manageress and her understudy. We stayed for 2 nights and on the wedding night our party had booked out the entire hotel they also held the reception there-a booking that was worth thousands. During the day i waited 25 mins at reception for my key and as soon as i went to look around the corner of reception for a member of staff the manageress's assistant arrived and promptly told me off for stepping into reception as though i was a child. The reception went without a hitch the food was excellent but as the night went on we had the disco in the dining room which was closed and locked up at midnight then last orders was called and at 00:15 glasses were collected even if they were unfinished. At 00:25 we were told we had to vacate the bar room. As some of our party still had full bottles of wine to drink the question was asked where were they supposed to finish thier drink? the answer was abrupt - "just go to bed" The lights were then turned off on approximatly 12 people sitting outside in the smoking area. But they could'nt re-enter the bar as the door was locked! This led all of our party stuffed into the tiny reception area wandering what to do next, Jennifer Steele-the hotel manageress the marched through us with her understudy and just said goodnight and promptly locked the kitchen door behind them. It was mentioned to her that we would have to leave bad feedback on her guestbook and low and behold the book was unavailible in the morning! This had led me to writing this review online and not in the guestbook. I would reccomend this hotel to people who just like a relax in nice surroundings and not to those who wish to have a function there. I'm afraid that none of our party of 28 guests will be returning or reccomending this hotel in the future.

Bovey Tracey is a lovely place to live. i have lived here nearly all my life after i movede from a village close by to be closer to my grandparents. Us locals are very friendly and are willing to help anybody who needs directions or recomendations on where to eat, drink or visit. It a small town not far from kingsteignton, Newton Abbot and of course the very famous Dartmoor. Bovey is lovely in summer and winter and there is lots to do all year round.

Brendon, Devon

Review of Brendon by Jerry Caterham on December 21st, 2006
Wow, The Brendon Valley - such stunning scenery. Beautiful, peaceful - a must for artists and walkers. You can walk south along the valley which takes one up the pretty "Doone" valley where RD Blackmore set his novel and/or North following the East Lyn River through Rockford and on to Watersmeet where there is a super National Trust tea room. We visited the area in the summer and stayed at a lovely little Inn - The Rockford Inn at Rockford, a small hamlet close to Brendon. I can recommend this place for its comfy accommodation, great food and such friendly hosts. They didn't mind us having the dog stay in our room either which makes a refreshing change from other places we have stayed at. Our room overlooked the river and this was all one could hear through the night - not a car horn to be heard!! Lunch by the river and then a stroll along the river bank is a must. I think this could just be one of the most lovely places in England I have visited. If your going to North Devon and Exmoor, don't miss the Brendon Valley - you wont be disappointed!

Bridestowe, Devon

Review of Bridestowe by joan barnett nee harris on February 28th, 2009
I lived in Bridestowe 1943 -1946 and went to school in Okehampton on the bus daily. I remember the US infantry division being there and wonder what unit it was , based there 1943- to April 1944 I also remember seeing Bob Hope and Francis Langford in the village hall entertaining the troops, we village children were allowed in and sat on the floor in front of the stage. I remember the long walk to Bridestowe station and as we had to pass the US camp entrance we had to show our identity cards enroute.

Chapmans Well, Devon

Review of Chapmans Well by vivienne morgan on June 28th, 2006
We have had our tourer pitched at this camp for the second year. The camping part has only recently been developed by the owners George and Danielle, the other field houses all the static caravans. As far as friendly and helpful go you could not get better attention at a 5 star park. The amenities at the moment are very old but so clean, a new modern shower and toilet block will be finished by the end of June -middle of July and a site bar -lounge childrens play area should be finished the same time. The Laundry has the best washing machines I have seen on any camp, clean clothes just like home. The camp is host to loads of wild life including Pheasents and wild ducks that are a permanent fixture and love being fed. Danielle has a few horses and donkeys at the time of writing this 'June 06' one of donkeys is due to give birth,WELL, it has been holding on since August last year , we have been told that they can hold out for 15 months almost that now. The camp shop is very well stocked and you can also order FRESH meat in from the local farm. I could go on and on but you should try this your selves they have seasonal pitches so you need not tow your van just leave it sited and enjoy a good well deserved rest.

Churston, Devon

Review of Churston by peter carroll on April 9th, 2009
My company helped restore the Churston Court Inn when Peter malkin owned it. It was a memorable experience indeed and there is a lot of quaint charm about the place, although much of it was gutted and restored some of the original remains, but not much! And. much to Peter's demise, we found nothing inside it's hollow walls!

Clovelly, Devon

Review of Clovelly by Jacko on August 22nd, 2006
Clovelly is a charming place. I first came here as a nipper in 1960 and fell off one of the donkeys taking me to down to the harbour. Luckily I was not hurt, and it has not stopped me returning at regular intervals. It still holds a fascination for me, but I prefer to walk these days. I can't wait for my next visit.

Dartmouth, Devon

Review of Dartmouth by keith stadden on May 18th, 2006
I wanted to write a quick review regarding the recent Dartmouth Music Festival.....what an fantastic weekend!! The weather held off this year, and the organisors got the mix exceptional right with the correct mix of music, from jazz, rock, blues and a school choir! I understand that it may not go ahead next year due to police charging issue, this will be a shame for the community. I must say the highlights were Joey the Lips and Mind the Gap at the bandstand. A very energetic Lesley Leigh at The Dartmouth Arms on Friday was very entertaining, but outdone that performance when we returned to see her at The Dolphin on Sunday afternoon that had everyone dancing in the street, and even persuaded the police to join in! I truely hope to see you again next year!!!!!!!!

High Bickington, Devon

Review of High Bickington by David Jennings on August 14th, 2006
The Golden Lion Inn was a wonderfull place to visit on my journey through Devon. The atmosphere within the family run pub was fantastic to see. Every single person who walked through the door had a friendly vibe about them. They have good quiality, genuine pub food which is also available as a take away!! how novel is that? I would recommend this pub to anyone passing through North Devon.

Ilfracombe, Devon

Review of Ilfracombe by Keith on January 2nd, 2008
I've stayed at the Palm Court Hotel in Ilfracombe on a couple of occasions and I've always found the hotel very clean. The food is excellent and the owner and staff are very friendly and helpful. Ilfracombe is located in North Devon and is beautiful, there are stunning views and lovely walks. Although Ilfracombe is very hilly the Palm Court is a level walk to the seafront and harbour. I like good traditional food and good friendly service, I get this at this hotel and I'll be returning again this summer, thank you all

Lynmouth, Devon

Review of Lynmouth by C Reading on July 20th, 2009
We love this area and visit quite often, but what we saw and heard on Thursday 16th July gives us in this country a bad name. An American family ordered a meal for themselves plus drinks for their two young children. As they were eating the meal the youngest asked for some of the chips from their mothers plate, the father got up from the table and asked the staff for an extra plate to put it on, he was told one meal for one plate. The couple then used the saucer from the mothers tea to put the food on. He then said so much for British hospitality. If we want tourist in our area, then this mean attitude must stop. I hate to think what he will say about the UK when they fly home to tell his friends.

Review of Okehampton by Rosemary E Whitehouse on January 14th, 2007
WE ATE AT THE FOX AND HOUNDS - LYDFORD - LAST NIGHT. THE FOOD WAS 1ST CLASS PUB FOOD. I HAD AN EIGHT OZ FILLET STEAK....ONE OF THE VERY BEST I'VE EATEN. VEG WAS COOKED TO PERFECTION. CHIPS - WHICH I WASN'T GOING TO HAVE BUT SEEING THAT THEY WERE REAL CHIPS...NOT THE USUAL FROZEN SORT....I HAD TO TASTE...AGAIN FAULTLESS. MY HUSBAND HAD A SALMON STEAK IN THE MOST DELICIOUS SAUCE WITH SEARED SCALLOPS...REALLY YUMMY STUFF. MY HUSBANDS PUDDING - A HOT CHOCOLATE PUDDING WITH A GENEROUS DOLLOP OF CLOTTED CREAM WAS MOUTH WATERING. I REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO GOING BACK THERE AGAIN - AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.( THE SERVICE WAS ALSO VERY FRIENDLY ) A TOP PLACE TO EAT.

OLD ORLEANS RESTAURANT I foolishly had lunch there Saturday Aug 19th 2006. The place is an absolute disgrace. Poor food badly served and a total inability to serve hot food hot. Seems the waitresses suffer from early onset of dementia. Avoid it like the plague J F Stackhouse

Salcombe, Devon

Review of Salcombe by Jill Glass on January 27th, 2006
Salcombe is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to wether its summer or winter. We have visited in both of these seasons. There is enought to do for it not to be boring, and not too much that it makes it too commercialised. There is a lovely town and several beaches nearby. Its just such a beautiful peaceful place, even when there are crowds in the summer.

Having visited Woolacombe prior to Easter for the last 27 years, what more can I say, both my wife & I love the place, the coastal walks are breathtaking, and woolacombe is such a peaceful, friendly and safe place for children. We have also visited Woolacombe during September over the years, enjoying the two holidays,we often say, if we won the Lottery, we would never stop our trips to Woolacombe, ruck sack & walking boots on, off along the coastal path to Lee, we don't need a Lottery win, just the village pup to be open for lunch.
