Squire, educated at St John’s, Cambridge, began his literary and journalistic life with Marxist sympathies, and progressed rightwards until for a time in the 1930s he was tangentially associated with Oswald Moseley. Around him and the outlets he controlled a conservative group of writers gathered in clear opposition to the modernists of the Bloomsbury Group. William Hodge in the wonderful England, Their England is a thinly veiled and affectionate sketch of him.
