After his Eton and Cambridge education Desmond MacCarthy launched into a lengthy career as a journalist and critic. He edited New Quarterly, was literary editor and drama critic of the New Statesman, wrote for the Sunday Times, and enjoyed some success as a broadcaster. His critical writings were published in several collections.
