River Ehen, Cumbria
Ennerdale Water. Flowing past the Cleator Moor and Egremont, the river
is around 10 miles long and is fed by the River Keekle, joining the
Irish Sea at Sellafield. Up until the 1990s, waters from the River
Ehen were used for cooling at Sellafield Nuclear Reprocessing
Facility. The river is home to the largest population of freshwater
pearl mussels in England, and is designated at Special Area of
Conservation. Poaching is widespread in the River Ehen, especially
between September and October, as it is a breeding ground for
Atlantic Salmon.
