Barrow Island, Cumbria
Barrow Island is a built up island located in the town of
Barrow-in-Furness , in Cumbria England, and has not in fact been an island since the Devonshire Dock was filled in during the 1980s. The island derives its name from the old Norse word for 'bare island' and is home to one of the largest shipyards in Great Britain, the BAE Systems Submarine Solutions shipyard. Barrow Island, also known as 'Old Barrow', was subjected to extensive bombing during
the Blitz , and
World War Two defences were constructed around the island to protect the docks.
