Shoreditch has recently become one of London's trendiest districts, together with its neighbour Hoxton. A new wave of young professionals has moved into Shoreditch, sending property prices sky-rocketing in what was once a working-class stronghold between Old Street and Bethnal Green. The boom was kick-started by Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and the other Young British Artists who moved here in the early Nineties, followed by scores of creative bohemians. Today, Shoreditch is jam-packed with lofts, galleries, chic bars and restaurants, coffee shops and clubs, with pop personality Boy George opening a fashion boutique, B-Rude, in The Clerk's House, a notable building in the High Street. Entertainment has long been a speciality of Shoreditch, the location, in the 1500s, of England's first theatre, and then a Shakespearian playhouse. These are marked by plaques in Curtain Road and Hewitt Street respectively. Later it became a centre for Victorian music hall. Shoreditch was once famed for its textile and furniture industries, the latter revisited through exhibits in the local Geffrye Museum. Some striking buildings reveal more about the history of the area, memorably St Leonard's Church, which dates from 1740 and holds the "bells of Shoreditch" mentioned in the nursery rhyme "Oranges And Lemons".
