An astronomer and mathemetician he left for St Helena in 1676 to make the first catalogue of stars in the southern hemisphere (Catalogus Stellarum Australium, 1679). In 1680 in Paris he was observing comets and correctly predited the return of a comet last observed in 1583 - Halleys comet. In 1720 he became Astronomer Royal of England.
