Renowned worldwide for its production of pork pies and Stilton cheese, Melton Mowbray lies at the centre of Melton Borough in attractive and unspoilt countryside. The town is a typical bustling mid-England market town that still retains a busy street market (Tues & Sat) and one of the last surviving Cattle Markets in the Country (Tues). It has a strong local history linked to its local food delicacies and the ancient sport of fox-hunting. Although located in a rural setting on the banks of the River Wreake, the town is encircled by the cities of Nottingham and Leicester, and the towns of Loughborough, Oakham and Grantham (all within 30 minutes drive time). The town enjoys easy access both by road and rail, and is close to East Midlands International Airport.
The town offers excellent leisure and shopping facilities, including a traditional style cinema, modern leisure centre (with swimming pools, gym and squash courts), tennis centre and parkland areas. An attractive Country Park, prolific in wildlife, lies to the North of the town.
Local landmarks within the town include the cathedral-sized church of St Mary's which dominates the skyline, a row of 17th century almshouses and the medieval chantry priest house (which was included in the estates of Anne of Cleeves by Henry VII).
Melton Mowbray annually plays host to the largest free show in England, the "Melton Show". This event attracts visitors from far and wide, and takes place on the last Bank Holiday in May.
The Borough has much to offer visitors, with its peaceful, rolling countryside - ideal for walking and cycling its waterways - especially the re-developed Grantham Canal and its many and varied attractions including Belvoir Castle, Wymondham Windmill and Twinlakes Leisure Park.
This area of Leicestershire possesses a wealth of natural beauty and is unspoilt by commercialism. So, whether you are planning a day visit or a short break away from the hustle and bustle of well-known tourist centres, this area boasts something for everyone. Population 26,000
