For beautiful riverside scenery, excellent shopping and vibrant nightlife, it's hard to beat Putney. Located in south-west London near to Fulham, Wandsworth and Roehampton, Putney has in recent years become a sought-after address, with property prices soaring. Famously, Putney Bridge is the starting point for the traditional Oxford and Cambridge boat race: this is a keen rowing stronghold, with some 20 clubs based locally. Walkers and cyclists using the towpath enjoy delightful river views, and a variety of picturesque pubs and restaurants look out over the tree-lined Thames. The recently created Putney Wharf piazza, a community of shops, bars, eateries and apartments, has opened up even more of the riverside. Elsewhere, attractions include a wide range of chain stores and independent shops, a cinema, a leisure centre and an arts theatre, while the School of Art and Design offers classes to beginners. Putney has a long association with music, with live performances taking place in regular venues such as the Halfmoon and during special events, notably the annual spring Music Festival, coinciding with the university Boat Race. Putney is served by mainline trains, tubes and buses, and it's convenient to the major exhibition halls of Earls Court and Olympia.
