Hammersmith, in west London, is a wonderful base for visitors to the capital. Only thirty minutes from Heathrow by tube, and fifteen minutes from the West End, Hammersmith itself offers many essential London experiences. This is a busy urban area with excellent shopping in two indoor centres, Kings Mall and the Broadway. The latter incorporates Hammersmith tube station and adjoins the bus terminus, and it capitalises on this ideal location with an excellent combination of high-street shops and designer boutiques. The nightlife ranges from exciting restaurants and bars to small music venues, while the prestigious Apollo hosts major rock concerts and the Lyric Theatre presents bold, contemporary drama. Riverside Studios, meanwhile, is an internationally acclaimed arts and media centre. It's situated on "The Riviera" - the other area of life in Hammersmith. Only minutes' walk from the thronging streets, a string of historic pubs look out over the Thames from windows, balconies and terraces. The Dove, which reputedly hosted the romantic trysts of Charles II and Nell Gwynne, features one of the smallest bars in England. Hammersmith is also close to the varied attractions of Chiswick, Fulham and Shepherd's Bush, and the great exhibition halls of Earls Court and Olympia.
