Tarbert’s harbour on Loch Fyne, Argyll, is synonymous with a warm welcome and safe mooring for mariners. Fishing fleets and yachts both seek refuge in the sheltered harbour – one of the few natural harbours in Scotland, while the village, famed for its seafood and Royal Castle, welcomes visitors in search of a relaxing stay on the picturesque Kintyre Peninsula. The Royal Castle is testament to Tar-bert’s historically strategic location; covered in ivy and now in ruins, it was built to stand guard over the area by Robert The Bruce in 1326. He wasn’t the only monarch to recognise Tarbet’s importance as a safe passage, King Magnus Barefoot of Norway negotiated the isthmus separating West and East Loch Tarbert and laid claim to the 40 miles of Kintyre Peninsula way back in 1093. No mean feat considering he and his men had to carry his vessel over the land. Thankfully, Tarbert is more accessible in the modern age and is only a short drive along the A83 from Inveraray. Tarbert is an ideal gateway to exploring the peninsula, ferries operate to Portavadie and what better way to discover Kintyre’s scenery than to follow the Kintyre Trail? The vistas are so inspir-ing that even former Beatle Paul McCartney immortalised the Mull Of Kintyre in song. You might want to bring a camera. Starting from Tarbert, on the A83, take in the sights of West Loch Tarbert, Corradale, the Atlantic Ocean’s might and Campbeltown. Tarbert hosts annual seafood and music festivals in July and september respectively. The surrounding hillside and coastal fringes make walking most pleasurable, but the ever present caveat to the whole of rural Scotland applies, remember the midgie repellant! Sailing fans can also enjoy The Bell Lawrie Scottish Series Yacht Race, taking place in early summer, it is the second largest event of its kind in Britain.
