Argyll Reports

Ardfern, Argyll

Review of Ardfern by fiona mcgrouther on November 23rd, 2011
Went to Ardfern every summer as a child until I was a teenager. Both my grandparents came from there. On a recent visit it seemed rather sad to see it, taken over by yachts of all shapes and sizes, the dreaded incomers, with pristine bungalows and former properties no longer recognisable.Even my Aunt Kate's garden had an extra house built in it. A shame to see the locals gone, unable to afford inflated house prices.Still my cousins old pub, the galley of Lorne provided an excellent lunch. When did the swans go and who arranged the gravestones down at Craignish;making it look good for the tourists, is not quite the same as getting it right. Time has done Ardfern no favours.

Dunoon, Argyll

Review of Dunoon by Miss Baillie on July 28th, 2006
Coming from 7 generations of Stewarts and Baillies, Dunoon Argyll, most of whom are buried in the old graveyard, in the family lairs - along with my paternal grandparents I am on my way back to start my business venture "at home" rather than here in England, where nobody knows me or gives a damn if I do or don't. The welcome you will get in Dunoon, Innellan, and the entire coastline around the Clyde Estuary is second to none. Scenery is astounding, places to visit too many to list here. All I want to say, now, is come up and see us some time - and haste ye back!!!!

Review of Dunoon by Gene Hubbard on June 20th, 2006
Dunoon is a warm, friendly town with a beautiful view everywhere you look! I was stationed there for nearly three years when I was with the US Navy at Holy Loch. Some of my fondest memories are with the town of Dunoon, the shopping, the Pubs but mostly the people! I look forward to taking an extended holliday there in the future! -Gene Hubbard Virginia Beach, Virginia USA

Lochgoilhead, Argyll

Review of Lochgoilhead by mary (ross) pollock on February 17th, 2010
Lochgoilhead has always been a favourite of our family. Our grandparents had a cottage there since the early 1930's. My first visit was when my sister and I were only 6 weeks old (twins). We spent our summers there every year until we were around 15/16 years old. As youngsters, we used to visit the Blairs' farm and buy our milk from them(fresh from the cows) In those years Loch Goil was very serene, and the villagers very seldom left except for doing business in other towns. We also along with our brother walk the cows into pasture. The fishermen were cousins of the Blair's (same name) They fished everyday, so we ate lots of fresh fish. The local souviner shop was owned by the Fulton family. There was a grocery store and butcher shop. The post office is still there, and also the hotel. The church, which was the local school as well is gone now. Also part of that church there was a hall, and in that hall, we remember seeing the first movie ever shown in Loch Goil, starring Alan Ladd. This was in the forties. We made lots of friends while visiting there and will never forget the wonderful times we had. Last year my husband and I visited Loch Goil while visiting Scotland from California. I know it has changed and pretty busy, but it is still a beautiful place and hope it remains that way. We knew most of the people that lived there but unfortunately everyone has either left or passed away. Sincerely, Mary Pollock (nee Ross)

Oban, Argyll

Review of Oban by Campbell on July 10th, 2009
A great seaside town 90 miles west of Glasgow. The Gateway to the Isles and The Seafood capital of Scotland. Great food - accomodation of all types and scenery to die for... as well as lots to see and do. Two great highlights are a walk along the pier and a sandwich at John Ogdens seafood shack and a visit to Benderloch 8 miles north. A Cafe, shops and a market selling lots of great stuff on the first and third Thursday each month await you. see you soon!
