Kelso is a historic town in the borders region of Scotland situated between the Rivers Tweed and Teviot, approximately one hours drive from Edinburgh and 1h 15 from Newcastle. Kelso is well-known as having the largest Market Square in Scotland; the cobbled square was once an important cattle market and still displays the Bull Ring in the centre. Kelso is a popular tourist resort with many interesting shops, holiday cottages, B&B’s, hotels, restaurants and a selection of places to eat. There is an ice rink, a bowling alley and swimming pool. The Town Trail is a walk around town to learn about the architecturally and historically interesting buildings including the 19th century Town House which houses the Information Centre, the five arched bridge over the Tweed built c1800 and the remains of the 12th century Kelso Abbey. Floors Castle was built in 1721 and is the ancestral home of the Dukes of Roxburghe it is the largest inhabited castle in Scotland, with walled gardens, a garden centre and a children’s adventure playground. The Estate offers salmon and trout fishing and grouse and pheasant shooting, there are woodland and riverside walks to explore the beautiful countryside, nature and wildlife including otters, red squirrels and a variety of birds. Other attractions include the famous Kelso Race-course, organised Border Abbey tours and nearby are the Teviot Water Gardens.
