James Thomson

1700 -1748. Scottish poet.
Abandoned studies for ministry to become a writer. Published The Seasons (1730). Tragedies included Agamemnon (1738) and Ciriolanus (1748). Dedicated his poem Liberty to the Prince of Wales, awarded with a pension. Alfred, a Masque (1740) contains the song Rule Britannia.
