The pretty white cottages of Braithwaite huddling beneath the looming Grisedale Pike and Causey Pike, offer a comforting view to travellers, be they on foot bound for some of the best walking in the Lakes, in the car motoring between Keswick and Cockermouth, or even on the C2C cycle trail. Braithwaite sits at the start of the Whinlatter Pass that rises to over 1,000 feet above sea level, offering views across the two lakes the village is near – Derwentwater to the south east, and Bassenthwaite to the north, with daunting Skiddaw beyond. The Coledale Brook splashes through the village, with two old stone bridges crossing it. With local industries of woollen manufacture, lead mining and pencil making gone (Cumberland Pencils moved to Keswick in 1898) the village can concentrate on its visitors. The spirit is served by Braithwaite’s two churches, St Herbert’s and the Methodist Chapel, and spirits are served by several welcoming hostelries including the Middle Ruddings Hotel and the Coledale Inn. But most refreshing of all is the countryside and the walking. For the more intrepid there are plenty of trails, and nearby Barrow Fell rising to nearly 1,500 feet offers terrific panoramas from its high points. For those wanting gentler paths there is the Comb Gill Trail at Whinlatter Forest Park’s visitor centre, but this is still a mountain forest
