Ambleside, Cumbria

Review of Ambleside by Andrea Smart on August 15th, 2007
I had the privilege of staying at the edge of Ambleside (just down the road from the Drunken Duck - which is a very nice eatery!) with my partner Andy in Spring 2006. We rented a wonderful cottage where a gorgeous view of sheep and lambs awaited us each morning from outside our bedroom window. Walking was wonderful, and was the main purpose of our trip. The weather was fabulous, and relaxation was just the ticket. Ambleside is definitely on our return list!

Review of Ambleside by Andrea Smart on July 25th, 2006
First came here on a coaching holiday in 1967. We stayed at the Salutation hotel. I well remember the boat trip on Windermere as far as Bowness. The little house over the river. This is a place that we return to on regular occasions. Recommend you do too.

Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria

Review of Barrow-in-Furness by Tony Bland on September 6th, 2007
Lovely approach from Abbey road, around Furness Abbey is a gem, starts too deteriorate towards the town centre. Portland walk should have been covered because the town cried out for it after all the years of buffeting winds. Rawlinson street is a disgrace at the Greengate end. Bicycles are rode willy nilly in Dalton road and Portland walk and not just by teenagers, and barking dogs are a pain in this same area. The people are generally friendly but it suffers like most towns with yob culture in a lawless environment.

Brampton, Cumbria

Review of Brampton by phillip glosser on April 22nd, 2009
This is one of the nicest villages we visited. We stayed at the Hullerbank House and drove into Brampton sevaral times to eat and look in the shops. The paople in all the shops were excellent and the people at the tourist information were extremely helpful. If we come back to the area, we'll come back to Brampton.

Caldbeck, Cumbria

Review of Caldbeck by Steve on May 2nd, 2006
Caldbeck - 28th April to the 30th 2006. My wife and I stayed at the Oddfellows Arms. This was a most perfect weekend. Nothing but nothing was a bother to the staff who made our stay absolutely wonderful. Locals are the friendliest bunch we have come across in along time in our travels around the Lakes, although I have to say overall Cumbrians are the nicest people in the UK. Food was to die for, Lamb Jennings a must have. Trout fillets were great too. Beer, the perfect pints are served here. Try out the Watermill to for a bite to eat, cheese platters are great value. We made friends with a couple on a break for their anniversary, up from Bolton. Our only regret was not seeing them before we left. All the best for the future to Ian and Chris. All in all a relaxing, (want to stay in Caldbeck 4ever) break.

Garrigill, Cumbria

Review of Garrigill by Dorothy on June 27th, 2009
We spent two weeks in Alston about three years ago. Since we were part way to Garrigill, it became a frequent spot for lunch. The George and Dragon was lovely--best chips in the world and fine friendly service. The age of the pub was evident and the small fires at each end of the room(s) were just enough to ward off the rain, ice and frosts of spring! We are so sorry the pub is closed, but understand the difficulties of keeping a pub going in such a small community. We send warmest greetings to Garrigill and its environments--the last wilderness area in the UK?--from California, and hope we hear of the George and Dragon's resurrection.

Grange over Sands, Cumbria

Review of Grange over Sands by Nick on October 18th, 2007
The advent of the Furness Railway transformed the small fishing village of Grange-over-Sands into the fashionable Victorian/Edwardian resort, with wealthy merchants building grand houses, which now accommodate top quality hotels.

Marvellous limestone buildings dominate this picturesque seaside town.

Grange has much to offer the visitor. A traffic-free promenade, ornamental gardens, a duck pond, golf courses, brass band concerts and vantage points for bird watching are just some of the many attractions on offer. Population 4,000

Grasmere, Cumbria

Review of Grasmere by Bob on May 22nd, 2006
Forget Tweedies or The Lamb Inn, tucked away on the end of the Wordsworth Hotel is the real locals bar with real people just enjoying a laugh and a quiet drink. This is where the bar staff go to drink, that says it all really !!!!!!! Food gets prepared in the same kitchen as the Wordsworth Hotel with all its awards, again that says it all. It may take a few visits before people speak too much, but when they do, its been worth the wait. Locals quiz on a friday, but dont take up all the seats, I´m not gonna stand-up.

Keswick, Cumbria

Review of Keswick by S Lindsay on April 24th, 2009
Well I stayed in the lovely gill head farm and whilst I was there I had a meal at the troutbeck inn. Well what a mistake that turned out to be. I ordered the lamb which was the most bland and dry peice of meat I have ever tasted. It was absolutely drowned in some horrid gravy sitting on a pile of ok mash. My wife had the Pate which was also tasteless and very wet. The veg was also bland I was disgusted with my kids pizzas. They were of the cheap frozen variety and they wasn't even cooked properly (the cheese hadn't melted!). When I complained I was treated like a criminal and was made to feel totally uncomfortable. The adult meals were knocked off the bill but I still paid for the kids stuff and got out of there! I would never eat at the troutbeck inn again and I would seriously discourage anyone from making the same mistake I did. If you know anything about good food and like to enjoy good quality meals then do not visit this place. The cider was the only thing I enjoyed and that was spoilt by the offence caused by my complaint. Which was polite may I add. Not one sorry for dishing up such rubbish food to me. It was as if it was my fault!

Review of Keswick by jeanette yeomans on March 19th, 2008
keswick, is a busy, and commercialised town, in cumbria.the people are friendly, and tourist information, situated in the moot hall, is invaluable, to travellers. however, the staff, the food, and the service, we received at the lake road inn, 10 lake road, was appalling, to say the least. , considering it was a monday evening, and the pub was very quiet.we did actually complain to the manager, and was given 2 cups of cold, stewed coffe, as compensation! we are holidaymakers, not regulars, is that the reason for the poor service?

Review of Sedbergh by Emily White on November 7th, 2009
Sedbergh is a delightfully picturesque town. Sedbergh has ample options for walking, from gentle strolls to difficult scrambles. We stayed in a lovely cottage, Saddlers Cottage and regularly frequented the most lovely tea room, the Sedbergh Café. Very friendly town which we would recommend to anyone. We will most definitely return soon.

If you should happen to be visiting this lovely little town make sure to pay a call to Platform 9,either for a meal or just for a drink. It is right beside the station and is set out like the interior of the old-style trains. It is a "different"experience which I'm sure people will enjoy, and has friendly staff,a good atmosphere and nice food.

Tebay, Cumbria

Review of Tebay by Shendie Green on October 1st, 2009
We stayed at Fawcett Mill Fields on our visit to Tebay. Just outside of the village, it is a most fantastic place for a large family reunion, although I believe it is also used for conferences and training. There were 26(and baby) in our party, and the facilities were tremendous. from the wonderful mature gardens including a stunning waterfall, to the well equipped kitchen. Spacious, well thought out in design and decor, it adapted itself to whatever we required, from an outdoor family BBQ, to the huge partyroom/lounge and a dining table that could easily accommodate all of us at one time! The owners are incredibly welcoming, but with such an easygoing and helpful approach, that we immediately relaxed and started to enjoy the wonder that is Fawcett mill Fields. Described elsewhere as 'out of this world', the phrase truly sums it up.

Whitehaven, Cumbria

Review of Whitehaven by purdie on December 5th, 2009
i have many fond memories ot haig pit, my dad was a miner all his life being in scottish pits from the age of 13, with 11 brothers and sisters most of the kids were in the pit, when they moved to seacliffe, he joined haig, they used to have family days once a year when the wives and kids coild come and see where dad worked, fair rides and stalls and a trip down in the cage if you wanted, i remember on a friday my dad leaving me in the car while he collected his wages, one night he was due home at 6, i walked down the the pit to find him no sign, panic, mother was in a state, dinner was ruined and dad was missing, in that order, i stood by the car in the car park while all the other cars slowly went home my dads hadnt, i walked into the pit now he was two hours overdue, we then all realised no one had told him his shift was over, at that time he was driving the boogies under the sea, and thats where he still was, we got him up and eventually home few hours late, nice to see haig open, kids in the future will not know how important coal was to us all then, nice to see history of the town not forgotton, its not all about boat and sailors, the miners kept cumbria going, and warm,

Review of Whitehaven by sheena brogden on April 11th, 2007
Having recently revisited Whitehaven after several years I have to say that it has undergone something of a transformation. The harbour area once a hub of trade has now become a harbour side that has a positively continental feel! The bars in this area are a must to visit and enjoy stunning views whilst enjoying a drink or a bite. The town itself is also enjoying a bit of rejuvenation whilst still maintaining the impressive feel of the old Georgian buildings, quaint new shops and tourist attractions such as The Beacon and The Rum Story all conspire to merge the old and the new. Well worth a visit.

Review of Whitehaven by John O on September 10th, 2006
Let the Disabled Burn Copeland Borough Council have been in breach of the Disability Discrimination Act since it opened its new offices in October 2004. CBC has a policy that states that mobility disabled staff, visitors and councillors will in the event of a fire be left in the building to be rescued by the fire brigade. That policy is not only in breach of the DDA, it also breaches building regulations and British Standards Institute policy. Copeland BC were told this in 2004/2005/2006 and refused to change that policy. Only when a concerned member of the public and user of that site complained the Fire and Evacuation officer for Whitehaven did they concede that their policy was illegal. However, that policy remains unchanged at the time of writing the report.
