In the Roaring Twenties, the suburb of Streatham became the entertainment capital of south London. Today, it's still famous for fun. Streatham provides activities for everyone, from the traditional pleasures of the Odeon multiplex and a night at the bingo to the thrill of indoor racing at the karting track, and tenpin bowling at the 36-lane Megabowl. For fans of cue sports, Potters Bar American Pool & Snooker Club is well-regarded. Near the karting track are Streatham Ice Arena, a landmark venue, and a leisure centre offering swimming, a gym, and dance and health studios. However, the local council has controversially approved plans to demolish the arena and leisure centre to make way for Tesco, while also building a new complex containing a replacement ice rink, pool and fitness centre. Out in the open air, an annual Kite Day is held on Streatham Common, and a two-week arts and entertainment festival takes place in parks and indoor venues every summer. Streatham is noted, too, for its many restaurants, bars and clubs. A former rural village, it was a fashionable spa town in the 1600s, and later a genteel Victorian neighbourhood. A wide variety of housing and historic buildings have survived.
