He made his stage debut in 1973 appearing in The Thrie Estates in Edinburgh, and his many other credits include Waiting for Godot in the West End and touring with Dicken's one-man plays Dr Marigold and Mr Chops. His first film role was in Amadeus (1984) , followed by A Room with a View, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Shakespeare in Love.
