After studying piano at the Royal Academy of Music, London, he went to Russia in 1910 which inspired pieces such as Gopak (1911) and In a Vodka Shop (1915). Between 1921 and 1939 he wrote seven symphonies and his Mater Ora Filium (1921) is his most accomplished. He also encompassed tone poems such as In The Faery Hills (1909), and was appointed Master of the King’s Musick in 1942. He published his autobiography, Farewell My Youth in 1943.
