Stepney, an inner-city area in east London, lies between Mile End Road to the north and Commercial Road to the south. Many of the surrounding areas have undergone regeneration, but Stepney retains much of its post-war character. A reminder of the far more distant past is St Dunstan's - "the mother church of the East End", which contains a panel belonging to the 10th Century stone church originally built by St Dunstan. The present chancel and nave date back to the 13th and 15th Centuries respectively. None of which is to suggest that Stepney is stuck in the past. Some bright new businesses have moved into the district including the Michelin-recommended gastopub L'Oasis, which also exhibits work by local artists. Families will enjoy the Stepping Stones city farm. Further east, around Mile End Park, the Ragged School Museum relates the experiences of poor Victorian children, and Revolution Karting caters for modern daredevils. Also in this area is a leisure centre, and sports at the Stadium. Stepney is ideally situated for sight-seeing, with the Tower of London and the City to the west and Docklands to the east. From Stepney, all of the East End's famous markets are within easy reach.
