Situated in central London between the West End and the City, Holborn has everything from historic buildings and world-famous streets to museums, art galleries, markets and theatres, including the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Holborn, in part, survived the Great Fire of London in 1666, and so its past is preserved in buildings such as the magnificent Staple Inn. Dating back to 1586, it's a familiar landmark with its jumbled, black-and-white half-timbered frontage overhanging the ground-level shops of High Holborn. In Ely Place, the church of St Ethelreda is more than 700 years old. And The Old Curiosity Shop, off Lincoln's Inn Fields, is thought to be central London's oldest shop. Built around 1567, it's reputedly the very one immortalised in Dickens' novel. Dickens lived locally - his Doughty Street house is open to visitors, as is the 17th Century Gough Square home of Dr Samuel Johnson, who produced the first English dictionary, and Prince Henry, Duke of Cornwall's office in a 1611 timber-framed house in Fleet Street. Composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in Theobalds Road. Four Inns of Court show Holborn's importance in the legal world. Lincoln's Inn, with its 15th Century buildings and lawns, is especially peaceful.
