Dulwich is a lovely area of south London where green spaces, woods, wildlife and an authentic village atmosphere together create the illusion that you're not really in a city at all, least of all one of the world's largest. This is among London's oldest settlements, situated in a valley surrounded by hills. Dulwich Village - a conservation area - centres on a high street lined with buildings from the 18th and 19th Centuries. Grand houses, cottages, small shops, an ancient burial ground and a Grade II-listed pub, the Crown & Greyhound, vividly recall the village's history, while many of the newer developments spreading outwards have been designed in similar traditional style. There are two exceptional visitor attractions. One is Dulwich College, a glorious Victorian building by architect Charles Barry, whose father Charles designed the Houses of Parliament. The other, set in beautiful grounds, is Dulwich Picture Gallery, the oldest purpose-built art gallery in England with a world-class exhibition of paintings by old masters including Rembrandt and Rubens. The annual Dulwich Festival takes in arts and culture for all the family. Walkers, meanwhile, enjoy the former farmlands of Dulwich Park and the woods climbing Sydenham Hill. A golf course is nearby.
