Entered House of Commons in 1701 as Whig member for Castle Rising. Exceptionable speaker rising quickly within party ranks. Given immense freedom by George I he chaired small group of Ministers, forerunner to present day Cabinet. Seen as England’s first Prime Minister. Knighted in 1725. Created Earl of Orford in 1742.
