Eleven miles north west of Morpeth and five miles sout east of Rothbury, in Northumberland in England’s north east, lies the village of Longframlington. The Eslington family originally held the manor but during the reign of Henry VIII the estate was sold off in lots as there were no further heirs. By the middle of the nineteenth century, it had become the property of the Duke of Northumberland and a number of other freeholders. The church of St Mary the Virgin was built around 1190 by Walter de Framlington. Originally dedicated to St Mary and St. John the Baptist it had become a single denomination by the time of the Reformation. One of it’s finest feature is the Norman chancel arch which is believed to have been built by the same as those who built Brinkburn Priory due to similarities in the features. Baron Mitford founded the Priory two miles away, in the twelfth century, and his master mason was Osbert Colutarius who built many churches throughout Northumberland. Once a substantial village, Longframlington now is mostly residential village whose inhabitants are either retired or commuters to Newcastle and Tyneside. The village has continued to grow and several new housing estates were built during the 1970’s and 1990’s.
