An English dramatist, his Tamburlaine the Great was produced in 1587, the first superior tragedy to appear on the English stage. Followed by The Jew of Malta (1588), Edward II (1590) and The Tragical History of Dr Faustus (1604). He paved the way for Shakespeare, and it is said he contributed to the three parts of Shakespeare’s Henry VI and Titus Andronicus.
