The image of Alnwick Castle has now become global through a certain young wizard, but as I was growing up in the 1980's this beautiful building was included in the hilarious Medieval comedy, The Blackadder. Sometimes known as 'The Windsor of the north' [I've also heard it called 'The Arundel of the north'] it is set in glorious surroundings, with the town a short distance away. Nowadays quite peaceful, it was'nt always so..and was in the firing line of English-Scottish hostilities.

Stayed at the schooner inn for two nights may22 to may 24 it was the best b/b i have stayed in would recommend this b/b breakfast was superb too much but so filling did not need any other meal the rest of the day people (locals )so freindly will defenitley go back to the schooner

Review of Blyth by Bronwynn on March 24th, 2011
Having visited Blyth beach this week I have to congratulate Blyth Valley Borough Council on their development of the beach area. Free parking was a real advantage and the children’s play area was a delight. The beach huts are a welcome site and the chance to rent them for the day is fantastic. The sand looked clean and although I am not a lover of dogs on the beach it was good to see them also having so much fun. I would suggest restrictions placed as to which beach they can use.
The opportunities for families to go and enjoy free facilities that support positive mental health, is a joy to see.
Blyth has been a part of my life for the last 50 years and still visit on a regular basis. Although the beach has been run down for a number of years and at times saddened me that the local council did not see the value in investment I am pleased to find that this has changed over the past couple of years.
I am a little concerned at the appearance of junk food vans as this may run the risk of the good work done becoming another tacky tourist spot. Look for other business opportunities, don’t just think of the cash today, and continue to invest for a happy, healthy, sustainable future for all generations to enjoy.
I look forward to visiting again soon.

My family and I moved from Blyth to the Midlands in 1977 because of the threat of closure of Bates pit, we still visit because we have a lot of family in Blyth. I was in Blyth from 14th - 17th March 09, I was quite dissapointed to see tha local market place, I have wonderful memories of Blyth market, Woolies and (PLR school), not all changes are for the better, I like the Keel Row shoping arcade but where have all the market traders gone? I feel Blyth hardly lives up to the name of a market town.

i was born in eastgate in 1939 i lived at no 16 eastgate i recently visited the area in 2007 i was very interested to see that it has kept a lot of its old charm it is the first time i have been back some 55 years i would like if there is anyone still living in the area from that era i have a brother called brian and a late sister called dorreen i have recently been in contact with john young & joe jobson . my brother and i went back to our old school at guidepost and were given a very warm welcome by all the staff we intend to arrange a visit to our first school which was at choppington . i will contact you again when i collect a few things that may be of interest to you yours john besford

Review of Gilsland by Paul Barton on April 12th, 2006
Stardling the Cumbria Northumberland county boundary lies Gilsland. It sits on the picturesque River Irthing which was a favourite place for Sir Walter Scott. He is reputed to have proposed to his wife here at the 'popping stones' which can be found in the delightful river gorge close to the Gilsland Spa. He visited the area often and based some of his characters around some of the local. Megs Merrilees perhaps being the most notorious.In Roman times there was a magnificent viaduct across the river - sadly not visible anymore, but the Hadrian's wall National Trail with its purpose built footbridge keeps faithfully to the line of the Wall through the village. The Victorians built the Carlisle to Newcastle railway through the Wall here but thankfully left the Poltross Burn Milecastle almost intact tucked away behind a bridge.

I must give a good report of the Station Inn at Hexham. I had a lunch there on Monday 11 May 2009 and it was the best fish, chips and peas I have had for a very long time. I will recommend it.

Visit to Newbiggin-by-the Sea July 9/11 2008
Very inpressed with the beach and area allong with the locale people we met.
We disided to make it or place to stay whilst visiting other areas of Northumberland.
We were fortunate to find the Captains Lodge Guest House situated on the bay front
The front bed room overlooking the bay was superb and very well accommodated the proprietor Mrs. K Mills was very helpful the breakfast's were excellent. secure parking for our car was also an extra that most guest houses do not have. Well done to Newbiggin and its people.

I have loved Seahouses and Bamburgh since we came on a caravan holiday 40 years ago. I come up often to walk the pier, smell the air, just relax. Walk for hours on Bamburgh beach, have lunch. Try it folks its the best.

Sunday lunch 22/08/2010
Tried to book for lunch.... only 3pm available ok that will do. Arrived at 2.45 and were seated immediately. Ordered 7 meals by 3.05pm waited and waited for food. 4.05 pm food came...Now hear this....
1. Salmon with hollandaise sauce... Swimming in sauce because the piece of salmon was so small and very cold... just out of a fridge or defrosted from freezer perhaps?
2. Roast turkey dinner.. Turkey deemed just ok but swimming in thick gravy... oooh not acceptable.
3. Roast lamb... meat fine even though the portion was small.
4. Roast leg of pork. As far as iI am aware leg of pork does not present in the form of pork chops or thick cut meat. Flavour ok.
5&6 Two roast beef dinners.... or was it roast leather? The meat was cut the wrong way and so could not be cut with a general table knife. Tough or what? Beware of the teeth!
7. Risotto.... like a savoury rice pudding. Solid enough to stand a spoon up in. Tasted of dish water.
Now for the vegetables....
Still ice cristals in the swede. Another bowl brought ... this had been heated beyond redemption in a microwave.
All other vegetables were over cooked and watery. Mashed potato... was this prepared last week?
Roast potatoes ... again microwave warm up. And who makes yorkshire puddings the texture of cardboard?
All in all, this was not an experience I would want to repeat.

we went to the swan on 21st may and boy we were not disapointed whatv a meal beautiful fish and meat but what a great menu to much choice. the person who lokked after us was great 6 of went in in was one of the best meals we had we have had for a long time .will be back a little gem in idilic place thanks the douglas clan

Review of Wooler by Bob Scott on September 27th, 2009
I played Wooler last week (September 2009) whilst on holiday in the area. It was quite excellent. The course was in marvellous conditions with amazing views all around. It is hilly! The greens are very interesting being quite large and many are heavily contoured. The highlight for me was the drive off the 17th. Top of the course driving down hill - great! Love to play the course again soon!
