Sixteen miles west of Hexham in Northumberland, lies the small village of Haltwhistle, on the A69 from Newcastle to Carlisle. Lying within a large ecclesiastical parish of the same name, the area has been populated since Roman times and the village itself is mentioned in the Domesday book as Haut Whysile which means ‘high boundary’. The parish church Holy Cross has a 7th century water stoup, believed to have been used by St.Paulinus. William the Lion of Scotland apparently mentioned the church in a grant in 1178 to the Abbey of Arbroath. Edward 1 granted a charter to the town in 1306 on his way to fight the Scots and the market is still held on Thursdays to this day. Subject to many border raids, a castle and several houses were constructed as defence but the castle has long since disappeared and the houses, Haltwhistle Bastle, which were at the bottom of Castle hill have now been demolished. The remains of a pele tower can be found in a hotel in the market place. In the 1830’s, the railway replaced plans to build a canal between Newcastle and Carlisle with a station at Haltwhistle. Population grew and the industries of mining, farming, woolen mills and brickworks sprang up all around. Today, it is popular with tourists en route to exploring Hadrian’s Wall.
