Born 1820 Florence, Italy, Died 1910. Nurse and hospital reformer.

Our most famous nurse, also known as the lady with the lamp. During the Crimean War she volunteered for duty and took 38 nurses to Scutari in 1854. She organised the barracks hospital after the Battle of Inkerman, and with her strict discipline for sanitation reduced the mortality rate drastically. On her return in 1856 she founded an institution for training nurses at St Thomas’s and at Kings College Hospital. Her main work was Notes on Nursing (1859).
