Nicholas Ridley

Ridley’s rise to great office in the church was for many years relentless, his fall terrible. He was a fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge, studied on the continent for several years before becoming Henry VIII’s (and Cranmer’s) chaplain, by 1547 was appointed bishop of Rochester, then three years later became bishop of London. He was a protestant of moderate tendencies, but when Edward VI died he sided with Lady Jane Grey’s party, for which Mary could not forgive him. After two trials and lengthy imprisonment he was burned at the stake in Oxford as a heretic.
