‘Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross’ is what most people remember Banbury for. The English nursery rhyme is probably based on a lady from the Fiennes family whose ancestral home, Broughton Castle, is three miles out of Banbury. She can be seen in all her splendour on the North Bar, just near the famous Banbury Cross. At one time Banbury had many crosses but they were destroyed by the Puritans in 1600s. Banbury remained without a cross until 1859 when the current cross, set in the middle of a roundabout, joining the North Bar and South Bar, was erected to commemorate the marriage of Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter. Supposedly the furthest town from the sea in the whole of England, Banbury is now a thriving market town thanks originally to the wool trade. Banbury has both the River Cherwell and since 1860 the Oxford Canal running through it. The Oxford Canal is still a bustling and busy waterway for long boats and can be walked along with ease and enjoyment. The town is now an ever increasing commercial and retail centre with the Castle Quay Shopping Centre hosting over 70 shops and cafes. Don’t forget to sample a Banbury Cake, similar to an Eccles Cake, but oval which can still be bought in various cake shops within the town. Banbury has continued to expand rapidly since the 1960s, accelerated by the completion of the M40 and now has great access to the Cotswolds, the Midlands and the South East as well as to London via the railways. Banbury hosts many good eating and drinking establishments with a range of different cuisines. Banbury has more pubs than most market towns; the local inn, the Reindeer in Parsons Street, now owned by the Hook Norton Brewery (Hook Norton being about 6 miles out of the town) was where Oliver Cromwell apparently planned the Battle of Edge Hill. Banbury has markets on both Thursday and Saturday and a farmers market on the 1st Friday of every month. Banbury has a new modern museum in the town centre which is accessed over a bridge crossing the Oxford Canal from the Castle Quay shopping centre and admissions is free.
