Pewsey is a large village surrounded by pretty countryside in the heart of the Pewsey Vale in Wiltshire, home to over three thousand people. It dates back to Saxon times and beyond, and was once owned by the Saxon King Alfred, whose statue stands ever watchful at the centre of the village. Picture book thatched cottages, and half timbered houses spanning the pages of history are uncovered at every turn, in the village that's famed for it's annual carnival where an explosion of delights takes place every year. Close by is the impressive White Horse which was gouged into Pewsey Hill to commemorate the coronation of King George V1 in 1937, more history is uncovered at the ancient church of St John the Baptist which will reverse time as it stands on the site of an earlier church and once saw John Wesley preach. The Kennet and Avon Canal arrived in 1810 as an efficient transport network, today sees brightly painted narrow boats, and a vast array of wildlife. If the thought of climbing aboard for a pleasing journey sounds tempting stroll down to Pewsey Wharf where boat trips offer an invitation to enjoy scenery touched by Mother Nature's paint brush.
