Bedford Tips

Harold Country Park - Fantastic place to go bird watching - scrubland, woods, marshland plus a massive lake. The lake has Hides from which we saw Red Crested Grebes and Herons as well as the usual Moorhens, Coots, Ducks and Swans. Mr and Mrs Saunders, birdwatchers from Bedford.

Stevington - Excellent condition old windmill here - refurbished in the 1950s and open to the public for free. Visitors can even go in and look round but as it is unmanned you need to collect keys for it from the Red Lion pub in the tiny village full of fairytale-like thatched stone cottages. Plenty of great walks and bridleways round here too - lovely place to spend a day.

The river embankment is very romantic to walk along at night, whilst the ‘finger lakes’ part of priory park just down the river is a wonderfully tranquil place to sit and gather your thoughts in daytime. Mark T, resident

Hate the place. On first impression it looks a lovely place to be but it really isn’t. Bedford is full of smug, ignorant ‘me me me’ middle class types. The town centre has a nasty atmosphere especially on weekend evenings. Horrifically dangerous to drive through at rush hour plus has an expensive permit based car parking system. Infinitely avoidable

The town centre has ample shopping for all your needs including many excellent markets and a wide range of quality clothes shops only a short walk away from De Parys Avenue, which is where some of the best hotels and guests houses are housed in large Victorian buildings. Lovely parks too, a good selection of food from various cultures and beautiful surrounding countryside. We love Bedford and will definitely be regular visitors in future! Denise and Colin T, Cornwall.

I think computer viruses should count as life. I think it says something about human nature that the only form of life we have created so far is purely destructive. We've created life in our own image. - Stephen Hawking
