River Adur, Sussex
gives its name to the Adur District. The river comprises of two
separate streams, the Eastern Adur and the Western Adur, that join
near the Shoreham Gap Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
(AONB). The Adur Estuary has also been designated a Site of Special
Scientific Interest (SSSI). Since at least Roman times the River Adur
has been an important route for trade. The river derives its name from
the Celtic word for 'water'. A variety of sailing and boating
activities take place on the river, such as yachting, rowing,
windsurfing and canoeing.
