BOOK SURREY HOTELS

Black Down, Surrey | Sussex

Black Down covers 965 acres of national Trust land and is situated
near Haslemere in Surrey and Sussex, England. It is part of the Greensand Ridge
of the north Weald and, at 280 metres above sea level, it marks the
highest point in Sussex and in the South Downs National park. A
prominent landmark for miles around, the down commands extensive views
across the richly wooded landscape of the Weald. Historically the
plateau formed an extensive heath that was grazed and managed as
common pasture. To the west of Black Down lies Marley Common, a
mixture of wood and heath. Pine and birch scrub there are being
restored to heathland in an attempt to benefit specialised wildlife.
