The West Yorkshire town of Castleford has ancient roots, in Roman times being a settlement of considerable importance thanks to its strategic position as the crossing point of the River Aire by the Ermine Street Roman road. At one time Castleford was the centre of the British glassmaking industry, producing vast quantities of bottles for the drinks industry and other major users. It was also a mining town, but the rapid decline of that industry in the 1980s left a legacy of urban deprivation that still remains in parts of the town. Increasing numbers of the town’s inhabitants – it had a population of 37,525 at the 2001 census – have benefited from its proximity to the booming city of Leeds, but the town itself is now on a definite upward curve. The Castleford Project is a landmark regeneration project aiming to revitalise the community, redevelop the town centre and make use of the natural resources such as the rivers Aire and Calder to improve the living environment for residents. Castleford has already enjoyed some redevelopment thanks in part to its geographic position – close to the junction of the M62 and A1, with the M1 and M18 only short drives away too. Various distribution and haulage companies have established bases in the town because of its favourable location. The town has other claims to fame too. Castleford Tigers are one of the country’s best known rugby league teams, though their grip on a place at the top table of the sport regularly slips. A centre of excellence for another, somewhat contrasting, sport can be found in the Xscape leisure development, where skiers and snowboarders can revel in the real snow slope. It also has a great leisure facility from another era, the wonderfully restored Queen’s Park, originally built to celebrate Victoria’s diamond jubilee. And in the arts Castleford gave birth to Henry Moore, one of the great British artists of the 20th century – many of his sculptures can be seen at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in a tremendous outdoor setting at West Bretton, to the west of neighbouring Wakefield.
