Although there was a Castleford Rugby club playing in the Yorkshire League from 1896 to 1906, the current Castleford club was not formed until 1926. It was not long, however, before the new Castleford Rugby League club made its mark. Castleford won the Yorkshire League title in 1932 and followed this with its first Challenge Cup victory in 1935. The club had to wait 34 years before further Challenge Cup success but then achieved back-to-back wins in 1969 and 1970. Castleford added a fourth trophy in 1986.
Despite the team's proud history in the top flight of Rugby League, Castleford have never won the league Championship. In recent years the team has had a roller coaster ride of relegation followed by promotion in consecutive years and is struggling to re establish itself as a Super League power. In the process of winning promotion back to Super League in 2007, Castleford achieved its record win by thumping Rochdale 106-0.
The team changed its name to the Castleford Tigers in 1992 and also renamed its stadium at Wheldon Road to 'The Jungle' to reflect its sponsorship by Jungle.com
