Birkenhead is located on the Wirral peninsula in the North West of England nestling on the banks of the River Mersey opposite one of the most famous places in the world – Liverpool. Birkenhead is often the overlooked town and whilst Liverpool was famed for its world wide trading links Birkenhead was in effect the “engine room” where many of the ships that sailed the Seven Seas were built. Back in the 12th Century Birkenhead was quite rural and for a period was farmed by local monks who established the first ferry across to Liverpool where they sold their produce. It wasn’t until the mid 1800’s though that Birkenhead started its rapid growth. It all started around 1824 when a certain William Laird came to live in Birkenhead. Despite a faltering start shipbuilding had arrived at Birkenhead – in 1821 the local population was recorded as being around 200 people by 1851 the population stood at 24,285. People were coming to Birkenhead in their droves anxious to be a part of this economic boom. There was still a reliance on the ferries to get across to Liverpool and it wasn’t until 1925 that works on the Mersey Tunnel commenced that was to further contribute to Birkenhead’s success. Birkenhead has in recent times experienced its economic problems, in keeping with most areas where there was a reliance on heavy industry – however today Birkenhead is once again undergoing a period of regeneration, there are new shops and stores, there are ample leisure pursuits available with cinemas, golf courses and leisure facilities all available on the doorstep, today Birkenhead is a town that is embracing the 21st century and
