Bill Tidy had stints in the army and an advertising agency before setting up as a freelance cartoonist, a career hinted at while he was at school and even in his army days. He is known in particular for the two cartoon series The Cloggies (in Private Eye) and The Fosdyke Sage (in the Daily Mirror), both affectionate parodies of ‘Northern’ life and the clichéd Southern view of it, though in fact his rather more political/satirical Grimbledon Down cartoons for New Scientist ran for longer than both of those. Tidy has also authored numerous books, and made many TV and radio appearances.
