Cheadle – or as it was once known – “ced leah”, meaning clearing on a wood provides an indication as to the fact that at one time Cheadle was covered in woodland. Cheadle is steeped in history with mentions as far back as the Doomsday Book and in those days it was, as it is today an exclusive location even then having twice the value of Bramhall. Cheadle has always been a place of change and this has in many respects contributed to its popularity. Today its proximity to Manchester Airport means that not only has the local population increased but so has the levels of business – more services and facilities can all be found close by especially with the shopping centres at Handforth Dean and Cheadle Royal. How popular is Cheadle? Well to provide so indication of the popularity of town it is reported that back in 1974 Cheadle High Street had over 24,000 vehicles a day using it! The extension of the motorway and the building of Kingsway has considerably eased the situation although on a bad day it still seems that it is that busy! Access to Manchester either by car, bus or rail is relatively easy so the attraction of Cheadle as a place to reside cannot be underestimated as the area retains an appeal for providing all the conveniences of modern living together with a solution for those modern demands.
