Greater Manchester Reports

Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester

Review of Ashton-under-Lyne by Bob Smith on August 11th, 2008
Many congratulations to those responsible for the wonderful floral displays around the borough. I have lived in the Stalybridge area for nearly forty years and I have never seen Tameside looking so clean and full of colour. A massive 'well done' to all those whose hard work is on show! Same again next year please.

Beswick, Greater Manchester

Review of Beswick by Doreen Neild on October 13th, 2011
I used to live in Graham Street in fact I was born there, just over the road near Grey Mare Lane public house. When I was sixteen I used to teach tap and ballet dancing at the Ragged School can't remember the name of the street. There was a chip shop on the corner. I regularly visited the market with my mum on a Saturday afternoon even when I was eighteen I still loved going. Mum bought her green grocery there at the same stall every week I can't remember the ladies name but I can still see her face I think her and her husband owned it, they had a daughter. There was a picture house they called it in them days then was taken over by the Domino Club. Mum and Dad had to move as they were demolishing the houses but they never did anything with the ground has grass over the area. When I pass that way which is'nt often I get so upset I have promised myself one day I will either drive there or get the bus and stay there for a while. Brings back so many lovely memories and I do miss being there as I now live in Bury but I will return.

Bolton, Greater Manchester

Review of Bolton by june stronach on July 13th, 2009
I regularly visited Bolton up to the time of the indoor market closure. I loved it and the stalls could not be compared anywhere. After an absence due to illness I visited last month - What a disaster the re-vamp has brought. No more individual stalls, no atmosphere, nothing. I am so disappointed and really don't envisage another visit, I can get the tram to Bury from where I live and they have my patronage from now on. Well done Bolton for spoiling what used to be a nice day out and losing my custom.

westhoughton market is always empty , why dont they do a sunday car boot like the one in horwich which attracts a lot of business.it would also raise some money and make more use of all the empty stalls which are rarely used.

Cheadle, Greater Manchester

Review of Cheadle by Bernard Carroll on January 8th, 2010
Had the good fortune to spend a Month in Cheadle and in a nutshell found it an ideal location to access anywhere in the UK. The number 11 bus passed by the front door and this took us to Stockport bus terminal which fed us to every other part of Manchester, Lancashire and if needed to the railway station and any where in the UK.In fact to anywhere in the world. We were able to travel on bus passes by bus and dispense with the worry and expense of car travel. The self catering accomadation was superb and the shopping in the High St left nothing to be desired. Of particular note was the "SHOP" worth its weight in gold. Also of great fame was the pub Lunches, there were lots of variety and of reasonable price. The local library also played its part making available its very efficient internet to the lonely traveller. Worthy of mention was the very efficient Chiropadist who squeezed me in and gave me the ability to be able to walk around the old haunts of my childhood in the forties in and around Ancoats, Ardwick Ramsbottom and Bury which has the best fish and chips in the world. I could go on but will take this oppurtunity to thank the people of Cheadle who helped make my visit something to remember.

Review of Manchester by Kate on May 30th, 2006
Manchester is my favourite city in the UK. Great nightlife, great shopping, very open minded, great people, very easy to find your way around. However, avoid the Mitre Hotel as it's vile.

Mellor, Greater Manchester

Review of Mellor by dave zazzi on June 7th, 2011
Mellor is to be found on the edge of the Peak District National Park and originally was in the County of Derbyshire, in 1936 it was transferred to Cheshire and then in 1974 it became part of Stockport Metropolitan where it is today. Evidence of Bronze Age and Roman settlements have been found next to Mellor Church and it is thought that a Roman villa is located under the church. The structure of the village of Mellor is mainly ribbon development starting at Longhurst Lane and as the road makes its way up the hill it meets Church Lane and continues onto Moor End Road where most of the older part of the village is to be found. On Moor End Road is one of the older buildings in the village that is in public use, dating back to 1700 the Oddfellows Society used to meet there in the 1860’s. The most striking feature of the village though is its church, St Thomas’ stands aloof of the village (some 760 feet above sea level) dominating the hill and providing splendid views of the surrounding countryside. Lying around seven miles from the busy metropolitan town of Stockport with Manchester easily accessible the residents of Mellor can enjoy the benefits of a village life and all that it has to offer.

Salford, Greater Manchester

Review of Salford by noel lee on May 13th, 2011
Born in ordsall in 1948, lived in the area till 1968 and experienced the full effects of the docks,Trafford road boys school, Ordsall Secondary Modern, Regent Road Baths,Ordsall Park and last but not least,Archie (coronation) Street. I visited Orsdall hall in the 60s as a school boy, taken there by Harold Riley, then a budding artist, seconded to Ordsall Secondary Modern School to teach local children art. I had the privaledge of being taught art by Harold Riley as a pupil of Orsall Secondary Modern in the early 60s. I remember Bergans Ice Cream in his horse drawn cart, Donkey stoning the steps with stones from the rag and bone man and the guy selling Corona pop from a truck which came around once a week. My final experience was working with Salford Police at their vehicle workshops in the early 1970s such a brilliant City, fabulous memories

Worsley, Greater Manchester

Review of Worsley by Dave Chesworth on October 27th, 2009
Regarding Worsley - it's great, apart from being spoiled by having a motorway going straight through the middle of it! Historically, Worsley is part of Lancashire. I wish it still was.

wythenshawe great place to live great people

Review of Wythenshawe by Mr Jones on April 17th, 2009
A wonderful mix of people and backgrounds most of whom care about the area. Experience the farm at Wythenshawe Park and the excellent tea rooms at weekend. Location is excellent near the motorway networks, excellent public transport links and hopefully the metrolink in the near future. 5 minutes from the countryside too!
