Wroxall is an inland village surrounded by green, rolling downland to the north of Ventnor. Here, the big visitor attraction is Appuldurcombe House, an 18th Century baroque stately home once belonging to the Worsley dynasty. The 11-acre ornamental grounds were designed by master English landscape gardener Capability Brown, who also oversaw extensions to the building. It became famed for being the grandest mansion on the Isle Of Wight. In the 1900s, the house was abandoned, then damaged by a land mine, and it's now a partially restored ruin. Maintained by English Heritage, it hosts an exhibition of photographs and prints that explain its fascinating history. There are also ghost walks at the house, with visitors urged to watch out for a phantom carriage and spooky monks in brown robes. The sound of a crying baby has been reported too. The grounds include an open-air theatre for plays and re-enactments and the Appuldurcombe House Owl and Falconry Centre, which stages flying displays by owls, hawks, buzzards, vultures, eagles and kites. Fans may also take courses to learn how to fly a trained bird. Back at the village, Wroxall is a good centre for delightful walks to Ventnor, Shanklin, Whitwell and Godshill.
