Arreton is a charming village located in the heart of the island. And although it may be small in size, it boasts several popular attractions. Arreton is a place that preserves local traditions such as brass-rubbing - demonstrated at the restored coach house beside the beautiful, medieval Church of St George. Equally ancient is the nearby carp pond, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Many island skills including woodcraft, glass-sculpting and pottery are kept alive at Arreton Barns Craft Village, where visitors can watch the artists at work and snap up a hand-made souvenir. The Village is also home to a pub serving beer brewed on the site from local ingredients, and to fascinating displays at the Shipwreck Centre and Maritime Museum. Not far from here is Arreton Manor, an imposing Jacobean home which is still occupied but nevertheless open during the summer for tours of the wonderful gardens and some of the rooms, with their original oak panels and stone floors, and secret passageways. Just outside Arreton is the Amazon World Zoo Park, where visitors can view more than 200 different animals, reptiles, birds, fish and insects while also learning about conservation work and the destruction of the rainforest.
