Rugeley in South Staffordshire is possibly famous for its power station – at one time there were two but nowadays there is just the Rugeley B power station supplying electricity for around 1 million people. In the19th century Rugeley was deemed to be one of the largest and striking market towns in the area. Lying just to the northern edge of Cannock Chase it has nearly always enjoyed its industrial heritage, there is evidence that in medieval times that iron workings and glass manufacture took place here whilst in the 19th and 20th centuries Rugeley was a centre for coal mining and this was one of the main reasons that the original Rugeley A power station was located here. Easy access to this raw material together with the available land, water (the River Trent and the Trent and Mersey Canal pass through the town) together with excellent communication links ensured the success of Rugeley A through until its closure in 1995. Today Rugeley is carving itself a reputation as a thriving commercial centre, on part of the land formerly used by the power station now stands Lea Hall Enterprise park which is attracting new companies to the area with diverse clients who are responsible for nationwide distribution as well as the more hi-tech companies seeking convenient office and distribution space and with the recent opening of the new eastern by pass the town centre is a lot less congested with traffic now moving more freely around the town.
